Key Features

Purpose Review | Financial Analysis | UAE Ties | Invitation Letters | Long-Term Visa Assessment

4. Do you need a UK Visitor Visa or an ETA?

The correct travel permission depends primarily on the traveller’s passport nationality, not simply on holding UAE residence.

Depending on nationality, a person may need:

  • A Standard Visitor Visa
  • A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation
  • Neither a visa nor an ETA

Nationals of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia can generally use the UK ETA system for qualifying visits rather than applying for a Standard Visitor Visa. Many other UAE residents, including Pakistani passport holders, require visitor entry clearance before travelling. Applicants should check their exact nationality before beginning an application.

Important distinction

A UAE residence visa does not convert a visa-required nationality into an ETA-eligible nationality.

However, lawful UAE residence is relevant because it shows:

  • Where the applicant normally lives
  • Their lawful status in the country of application
  • Their employment or business circumstances
  • Their reasons for returning after the UK visit

5. What can you do as a Standard Visitor?

Tourism and family visits

A Standard Visitor may travel for:

  • Holidays
  • Sightseeing
  • Visiting relatives
  • Visiting friends
  • Attending family events
  • Recreational activities

Business visits

Permitted business activities can include:

  • Attending meetings
  • Participating in conferences or seminars
  • Attending job interviews
  • Negotiating and signing contracts
  • Attending trade fairs to promote an overseas business
  • Receiving certain work-related training
  • Completing limited intra-corporate activities

A visitor cannot use the route to fill a UK job, provide ordinary services to a UK business or enter the UK labour market.

Short study

A Standard Visitor can generally study at an accredited institution for up to six months. English-language study lasting more than six months normally requires the separate Short-term Study route.

Activities requiring another route

A Standard Visitor cannot ordinarily:

  • Take paid or unpaid employment with a UK business
  • Operate as a UK self-employed worker
  • Claim public funds
  • Live in the UK through repeated visits
  • Marry, register a civil partnership or give notice of marriage

A person travelling specifically to marry or form a civil partnership normally requires a Marriage Visitor Visa.

6. What makes a credible UK Visitor Visa application?

A specific and reasonable purpose

The application should clearly explain:

  • Why the applicant is travelling
  • Proposed arrival and departure dates
  • Places to be visited
  • Where the applicant will stay
  • Who they will meet
  • Who will pay for the trip
  • Why the proposed duration is appropriate

The itinerary does not need to contain prepaid, non-refundable bookings. UKVI advises applicants that they are not required to book travel before a decision is made.

A trip that matches the applicant’s finances

There is no single fixed bank balance that guarantees a UK Visitor Visa.

The available funds should reasonably cover:

  • Airfare
  • Accommodation
  • Local transport
  • Daily expenses
  • Planned activities
  • Dependants travelling with the applicant
  • Return or onward travel

Financial records should also explain where the money came from. A recently deposited large balance without a credible source may be less persuasive than a consistent income and savings history. UKVI’s supporting-document guidance recommends evidence showing that the applicant genuinely has access to sufficient funds and that the origin of those funds is identifiable.

Strong personal circumstances outside the UK

UKVI must be satisfied that the applicant is a genuine visitor who will leave the UK at the end of the trip.

Relevant evidence may include:

  • Stable UAE employment
  • Approved annual leave
  • Salary and continuing employment
  • UAE business ownership
  • Spouse and children
  • Dependent parents
  • Continuing education
  • UAE residence status
  • Property or tenancy commitments
  • Previous lawful travel
  • Professional or commercial responsibilities

UKVI expressly recommends evidence of employment, education, ongoing self-employment, lawful residence and the applicant’s circumstances in their home or residence country.

A credible visit pattern

A long-term visa is not permission to live in the UK.

UKVI may examine:

  • Frequency of previous visits
  • Length of each stay
  • Time spent outside the UK
  • Whether the applicant’s employment remains abroad
  • Whether the UK appears to have become the applicant’s principal home

A visa may be cancelled where travel history shows that it is being used for repeated extended residence.

7. Can someone in the UK sponsor the visit?

A relative, friend, company or other genuine third party may potentially pay for:

  • Accommodation
  • Airfare
  • Daily expenses
  • Other reasonable trip costs

Third-party support should be documented through:

  • Invitation letter
  • Evidence of the relationship
  • Host’s passport or UK immigration status
  • Address and accommodation evidence
  • Employment or financial documents
  • Explanation of the support being offered

The sponsor must have a genuine personal or professional relationship with the applicant and must not be in breach of UK immigration law. Sponsorship does not remove the need to establish that the applicant is a genuine temporary visitor.

8. Recommended document structure

Personal and UAE residence evidence

  • Current passport
  • Previous passports
  • UAE residence visa
  • Emirates ID
  • Marriage and birth certificates where relevant

Purpose-of-visit evidence

  • Covering explanation
  • Travel itinerary
  • Accommodation details
  • Invitation letter
  • Family-event evidence
  • Conference or meeting invitation
  • Business correspondence

Employment or business evidence

For employees:

  • Employment certificate
  • Job title and salary
  • Length of service
  • Approved leave
  • Payslips
  • Salary bank credits

For business owners:

  • UAE trade licence
  • Ownership records
  • Corporate tax or VAT evidence
  • Business bank statements
  • Contracts and invoices
  • Employees and office evidence

Financial evidence

  • Personal bank statements
  • Salary records
  • Savings or investments
  • Trip budget
  • Evidence explaining major deposits
  • Sponsor’s financial documents where applicable

Return and personal-circumstance evidence

  • Family records
  • Employment obligations
  • Business commitments
  • Study enrolment
  • Property or tenancy documents
  • Previous travel records

Documents not written in English or Welsh require certified translations.

9. Long-term UK Visitor Visas

Applicants who regularly visit the UK may apply for a long-term Standard Visitor Visa.

Visa validity Current government fee Maximum normal stay
Up to 6 months £135 Up to 6 months
2 years £506 Up to 6 months per visit
5 years £903 Up to 6 months per visit
10 years £1,128 Up to 6 months per visit

These fees took effect on 8 April 2026.

A long-term application should normally explain:

  • Why repeated UK travel is expected
  • Frequency and purpose of future visits
  • Previous UK travel compliance
  • Continuing financial capacity
  • Stable circumstances outside the UK

UKVI may issue a visa for a shorter period than requested. The difference in the application fee is not refunded, and refusal also does not produce a fee refund.

10. Applying from Dubai and the UAE

Step 1

Check visa or ETA eligibility

Confirm the requirement using passport nationality rather than UAE residence alone.

Step 2

Apply online

The Standard Visitor application must be completed online. The earliest normal filing date is three months before the intended journey.

Step 3

Upload supporting evidence

The application should present a consistent account of: Purpose, Dates, Costs, Funding, Employment or business, Host arrangements, Previous immigration history.

Step 4

Attend biometrics

Applicants requiring a visa normally attend a Visa Application Centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph. Official UK Visa Application Centres operate in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Step 5

UKVI assessment

UKVI may verify documents, request further evidence or conduct an interview. Standard Visitor applications submitted outside the UK are usually decided within approximately three weeks after identity and documents have been provided, although complex cases may take longer.

Step 6

Review the decision and travel permission

The applicant should confirm: Visa validity, Permitted entries, Digital or physical evidence of status, Travel-document details, Any conditions attached to the permission. A visa permits travel to the UK border; admission remains subject to border checks and continued compliance with the Visitor rules.

11. Remote work while visiting

A visitor may respond to emails, attend remote meetings or carry out incidental duties connected with overseas employment.

However, remote work must remain secondary to the principal permitted purpose of the trip. The UK should not become the applicant’s main workplace, and the visit should not depend on working remotely from the UK for an extended period.

A digital nomad seeking to live in the UK while working remotely should not present the Standard Visitor route as a remote-work residence visa.

12. Common refusal risks

A UK Visitor Visa may be weakened by:

A vague or changing travel purpose
A proposed stay disproportionate to the itinerary
Trip costs that do not match income
Unexplained bank deposits
Weak evidence of UAE employment or business
Limited reasons to return
Overreliance on the UK sponsor
Conflicting information across forms and documents
Undisclosed visa refusals
Suspected intention to work
Frequent or lengthy previous visits
A long-term visa request unsupported by travel need

The assessment is based on the complete circumstances rather than one document or a fixed bank balance.

13. Reapplying after a UK Visitor Visa refusal

A new application should not simply repeat the refused file.

The refusal decision should be reviewed against:

  • Purpose of visit
  • Financial evidence
  • Source of funds
  • Employment or business ties
  • Sponsor evidence
  • Previous travel
  • Inconsistencies identified by UKVI
  • Changes since the refusal

A new application should explain what has materially changed or which additional evidence now addresses the previous concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the UK Standard Visitor Visa?

It is a temporary route for tourism, visiting relatives or friends, certain business activities, short study and other permitted purposes. Most visits are limited to a maximum of six months.

Yes. A lawful UAE resident who requires a visa can apply online and attend biometrics at the Dubai or Abu Dhabi Visa Application Centre.

UAE nationals can generally apply for a UK ETA for qualifying visits rather than a Standard Visitor Visa. UAE residents holding other passports must check the requirement for their nationality.

Pakistani passport holders are visa nationals and generally require entry clearance before travelling to the UK as visitors. UAE residence supports the application circumstances but does not remove the visa requirement.

There is no fixed published amount that guarantees approval. The applicant should demonstrate accessible and credible funds sufficient for the planned duration, accommodation, airfare and other reasonable costs.

It is not normally compulsory for ordinary tourism. It is relevant where the applicant is visiting a relative, friend, company or event, but it does not replace the applicant’s own evidence of eligibility.

A Standard Visitor can normally stay for up to six months. A two, five or ten-year visa still ordinarily limits each visit to six months.

You cannot normally take employment or work for a UK business. Certain restricted business and professional activities are permitted under the Visitor rules.

Incidental remote work may be allowed where it remains secondary to the main permitted purpose of the visit. Travelling primarily to work remotely from the UK is not permitted under the Standard Visitor route.

UKVI states that an overseas Standard Visitor application is usually decided within three weeks after the applicant has provided identity and documents. Further checks can extend processing.

Family members may apply at the same time, but each person requires a separate application, fee and biometrics appointment.

No. UK Visas and Immigration decides the application, and border authorities determine admission. Sufficient funds, an invitation or a previous UK visa does not guarantee approval.
