Canada Express Entry in 2026: What Has Changed?

New and renewed selection categories

Canada’s 2026 Express Entry categories include:

French-language proficiency

Healthcare and social-services occupations

STEM occupations

Trade occupations

Education occupations

Transport occupations

Physicians with Canadian work experience

Senior managers with Canadian work experience

Researchers with Canadian work experience

Skilled military recruits

The physicians, senior managers and researchers categories specifically require eligible Canadian work experience, while other occupation-based categories may accept qualifying experience gained in Canada or abroad.

Job-offer CRS points removed

Since March 25, 2025, Express Entry candidates no longer receive the former 50 or 200 CRS points for arranged employment. A valid job offer can still matter for eligibility under the Federal Skilled Trades Program, parts of the Federal Skilled Worker Program and some PNP streams.

Category experience increased

For the principal occupation-based 2026 categories, candidates generally need at least 12 months of qualifying full-time work experience, or an equivalent amount of part-time experience, in one listed occupation during the previous three years. The experience does not necessarily need to be continuous.

Last reviewed: July 2026. Express Entry categories, occupation lists and invitation priorities can change.

A distinctive four-gate explanation Four Gates Stand Between a Profile and Canadian Permanent Residence

Gate 1: Program Eligibility

You must first qualify for at least one program managed through Express Entry:

Express Entry is the online system used to manage these three skilled-immigration programs; it is not itself a separate visa category.

Gate 2: CRS Ranking

Eligible candidates enter the Express Entry pool and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System score.

The CRS considers factors including:

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points.

Gate 3: Invitation Route

You must first qualify for at least one program managed through Express Entry:

An invitation may arise through:

Having an eligible profile does not guarantee that the candidate’s CRS score will be high enough for the relevant invitation round.

Gate 4: Document Verification

After receiving an Invitation to Apply, the candidate must prove the information declared in the profile.

IRCC can reassess:

The invitation is valid for only 60 days, making advance document preparation essential.

The two scores applicants commonly confuse

FSW 67 Points and CRS Points Are Not the Same

Federal Skilled Worker eligibility score

Federal Skilled Worker applicants are assessed out of 100 points.

Scoring 67 or more may make the applicant eligible to enter Express Entry through the Federal Skilled Worker Program. It does not mean the applicant will receive an invitation.

Comprehensive Ranking System score

After entering the pool, the applicant receives a CRS score that ranks the profile against other candidates. A person can:

Federal Skilled Worker Program

Federal Skilled Worker Program for UAE and GCC Professionals

For most applicants residing outside Canada, the Federal Skilled Worker Program is the principal Express Entry pathway.

Basic work-experience requirement

The applicant’s qualifying experience must generally:

The primary occupation does not necessarily need to be the applicant’s most recent occupation.

Language requirement

Federal Skilled Worker applicants need at least CLB 7 or NCLC 7 in all four abilities in their first official language. For IELTS General Training, CLB 7 generally corresponds to 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Education requirement

An applicant educated outside Canada generally needs an Educational Credential Assessment showing the Canadian equivalency of the foreign qualification. The ECA must be less than five years old when the Express Entry profile and permanent-residence application are submitted.

Settlement funds

Federal Skilled Worker applicants generally need to demonstrate the required settlement funds unless they are authorised to work in Canada and hold a qualifying valid job offer.

Intention to live outside Quebec

Federal Express Entry applicants must intend to live outside Quebec because Quebec operates its own skilled-worker selection system.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class is intended for skilled workers who have recent qualifying Canadian work experience. The applicant generally needs at least one year or 1,560 hours of authorised, paid Canadian work experience in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 during the three years before applying. Self-employment and work completed while the person was a full-time student generally do not count toward the minimum, subject to a specific policy for certain physicians.

Language levels

TEER 0 or 1 occupation:

CLB or NCLC 7

TEER 2 or 3 occupation:

CLB or NCLC 5

There is no minimum education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class, although Canadian education or an ECA for foreign education can improve the CRS score.

Important for UAE applicants

A GCC resident who previously studied or worked in Canada may potentially qualify under CEC if the Canadian work experience remains within the relevant three-year period and meets all other requirements.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is designed for qualified workers in eligible trade occupations. Applicants generally need:

Basic work-experience requirement

There is no formal education requirement, although an ECA can improve the CRS score.

Language requirement

Speaking and listening:

CLB or NCLC 5

Reading and writing:

CLB or NCLC 4

For many offshore applicants, the certificate-of-qualification or valid-job-offer requirement makes the Federal Skilled Trades Program more complex than the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

Category-based Express Entry selection

Your Occupation May Create a Second Invitation Opportunity

Category-based selection allows IRCC to invite high-ranking candidates who meet a defined economic or labour-market category, rather than relying only on broad general rounds. The applicant must still:

Current 2026 categories

Current 2026 categories

Candidates generally need NCLC 7 in all four French abilities. French can be valuable in three different ways:

Healthcare and social services

This category includes selected occupations such as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, medical technologists, social workers and other health or social-services professionals. The precise NOC list must be checked at the time of profile assessment.

STEM

The 2026 STEM list includes selected roles such as cybersecurity specialists and various engineering occupations. Applicants should not assume that every software or IT occupation is included merely because it is commonly described as STEM.

Trade occupations

Eligible trade occupations are selected according to Canada’s identified labour-market needs.

Education occupations

The category includes selected roles such as secondary-school teachers, elementary teachers, early-childhood educators and teaching assistants.

Transport occupations

The 2026 category includes selected aviation and automotive roles, including pilots, aircraft mechanics and certain vehicle-mechanic occupations.

Canadian-experience categories

The following categories require qualifying Canadian work experience:

Skilled military recruits

This category is limited to qualifying foreign skilled military applicants connected to the Canadian Armed Forces and should not be presented as a general immigration pathway for all serving or former military personnel

Comprehensive Ranking System strategy

A CRS Score Is Not Static

A proper Express Entry assessment should identify both the current score and realistic ways to improve it.

Factors that can improve CRS

Stronger language results

Moving from CLB 7 or 8 to CLB 9 can significantly affect both core language points and skill-transferability points.

French-language ability

French can provide additional CRS points and access to French-category draws.

Spouse strategy

In some cases, comparing both spouses as potential principal applicants can produce a different CRS outcome.

Additional education

A new credential may improve education points, but only if completed and properly assessed.

Canadian study or work

Canadian education and eligible Canadian work experience can add points.

Provincial nomination

An Express Entry-linked provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points.

Updated profile information

Candidates should update the profile when circumstances change, including:

Language tests must remain less than two years old and ECAs less than five years old both when the profile is created and when the permanent-residence application is submitted.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Provincial Nomination: A Separate Strategy, Not Merely a Backup

Canada’s provinces and participating territories can nominate candidates whose skills, education and experience match regional economic requirements and who genuinely intend to live in the nominating jurisdiction. An Express Entry-aligned nomination gives the candidate 600 additional CRS points. To qualify through an Express Entry PNP stream, the candidate must also qualify for at least one federal Express Entry program.

Provinces and territories with nominee programs

Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program

Ontario may target candidates according to factors such as occupation, CRS score, French ability, work experience or provincial labour-market priorities.

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program

Alberta can select candidates whose profiles support provincial economic and labour requirements, including candidates with provincial connections or occupations of interest.

British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program

British Columbia operates nomination pathways connected to skilled employment, regional requirements and identified economic priorities.

Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program

Saskatchewan may select candidates according to occupation, provincial connections, employment and current stream criteria.

Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program

Manitoba places significant emphasis on connections to the province, employment, education, family or strategic recruitment.

Nova Scotia Nominee Program

Nova Scotia may use targeted selections and occupation-based priorities according to provincial needs.

New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program

Nova Scotia may use targeted selections and occupation-based priorities according to provincial needs.

Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program

Prince Edward Island periodically invites candidates whose profiles correspond with its smaller and more focused labour market.

Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program

The province offers pathways for skilled workers and others who can contribute to its economic and demographic needs.

Yukon Nominee Program

Yukon nomination is commonly linked to regional employers and labour-market needs.

Northwest Territories Nominee Program

The Northwest Territories operates nomination streams intended to address territorial employment and economic requirements. Quebec does not participate in the PNP, while Nunavut does not operate a provincial nominee program

Does a job offer help?

Job Offer: No Longer CRS Points, But Still Potentially Important

Since March 25, 2025, job offers no longer generate the former 50 or 200 additional CRS points.

A valid job offer may still be relevant because it can:

Superior Consulting should not market Canadian job offers or imply that purchasing employment is a legitimate CRS strategy.

Required documents

Build the File Before the Invitation Arrives

A candidate has only 60 days after receiving an ITA to submit the permanent-residence application. Documents should therefore be planned before entering the pool or while waiting for an invitation.

Express Entry profile documents

IRCC specifically identifies language results, education evidence, employment evidence, proof of funds and provincial nomination among the documents used for Express Entry.

Post-ITA documents

A job title printed on a UAE residence visa is not always sufficient to prove Canadian immigration work experience.

IRCC assesses whether the applicant performed:

Application process From Dubai Profile Assessment to Canadian Permanent Residence

Common Express Entry and PNP Errors

1. Determine program eligibility

Assess FSW, CEC and FST requirements.

2. Identify the correct NOC

The NOC must reflect the applicant’s actual duties rather than merely matching the job title.

3. Complete language testing

Take an approved English or French test.

4. Obtain the ECA

Assess qualifying foreign educational credentials.

5. Calculate FSW and CRS scores

Confirm both federal eligibility and pool competitiveness.

6. Build the provincial strategy

Identify provinces matching the candidate’s occupation, score, language, connections and settlement objectives.

7. Create the Express Entry profile

Eligible candidates enter the pool and receive a CRS score. Profiles generally remain active for up to 12 months unless they become ineligible earlier.

8. Monitor federal and provincial opportunities

Track general, program-specific, category-based and PNP invitation rounds.

9. Receive an ITA or provincial nomination

An Express Entry-linked nomination adds 600 points after it is accepted.

10. Submit the permanent-residence application

The completed application must be filed within 60 days of the invitation.

11. Biometrics, medical and verification

IRCC assesses documentation and admissibility. Applicants generally have 30 days from the biometrics instruction letter to provide biometrics.

12. Permanent-residence decision

If approved, the applicant and accompanying family complete the applicable confirmation and landing process.

Superior Global’s Canada assessment model

We Assess the Pathway, Not Just the Score

Federal eligibility audit

We first establish whether the applicant qualifies under FSW, CEC or FST.

Dual-score calculation

We separately calculate:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker 67-point score
  • The Comprehensive Ranking System score

NOC and occupation analysis

We compare actual duties against the NOC lead statement and main duties.

Category-based selection review

We assess whether the applicant’s occupation and recent experience correspond with a current category.

Provincial opportunity mapping

We compare the profile with relevant provinces and territories rather than recommending one province to every applicant.

Score-improvement plan

Where appropriate, we evaluate:

  • Better English results
  • French
  • Spouse as principal applicant
  • Spouse language results
  • Additional work experience
  • Education
  • Provincial nomination
  • Canadian experience or education

UAE and GCC document review

We identify whether Gulf-region employment, salary and company records adequately support the declared experience.

Transparent eligibility advice

Creating an Express Entry profile is not the same as receiving an invitation.

We explain the difference between:

  • Eligible
  • Competitive
  • Category-targeted
  • Provincially suitable
  • Currently unlikely

1. Can I apply for Express Entry while living in Dubai?

Yes. Express Entry is available to eligible foreign skilled workers residing outside Canada. Applicants living in Dubai or elsewhere in the GCC can create a profile if they qualify under FSW, CEC or FST and have the required information and documents.

Not necessarily.
Federal Skilled Worker applicants can qualify without a job offer. However, a job offer may remain important for Federal Skilled Trades eligibility and some PNP streams, even though job offers no longer produce additional CRS points.

There is no permanent minimum CRS score that guarantees selection.
The required score changes according to:

  • Draw type
  • Number of invitations
  • Candidates in the pool
  • Category
  • Program
  • Provincial nomination

Candidates are ranked against others eligible for the particular round.

A score of 67 out of 100 may satisfy the Federal Skilled Worker selection threshold.
It does not guarantee an invitation because candidates are subsequently ranked through the separate CRS system.

An accepted Express Entry-linked provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, making an invitation highly likely in a relevant round. The candidate must still remain eligible and comply with the nomination conditions.

Some provincial pathways may not require a job offer, while others do.
Requirements change according to the province, occupation, stream, CRS score, provincial connection and labour-market priorities. No-job-offer eligibility should be verified at the time of assessment.

There is no universally best province.
The most appropriate province depends on:

  • Occupation
  • CRS score
  • Language
  • Job offer
  • Work experience
  • Family connections
  • Previous study or work
  • Provincial demand
  • Genuine settlement intention

Potentially, but the applicant must comply with each province’s rules and maintain credible settlement intentions.
Declaring a genuine intention to settle in several unrelated provinces at the same time can create credibility concerns.

An approved language examination is mandatory, but IELTS is not the only option.
Express Entry accepts:

  • IELTS General Training
  • CELPIP-General
  • PTE Core
  • TEF Canada
  • TCF Canada

No. For Express Entry, the accepted IELTS version is IELTS General Training.

Approved language-test results must be less than two years old when the profile and permanent-residence application are submitted.

An ECA must be less than five years old when the Express Entry profile and permanent-residence application are submitted.

Yes.
There is no absolute Express Entry age prohibition at 40. However, CRS age points decline as age increases, and the FSW age-factor points also reduce after age 35. A provincial nomination, French, strong language results or spouse strategy may become more important for older applicants.

Potentially.
A Federal Skilled Worker applicant aged 47 or older receives zero FSW age-factor points, but may still reach the 67-point threshold through other factors. CRS age points will also be limited, so the profile requires careful evaluation.

Yes.
A spouse’s education, language ability and Canadian work experience can contribute points. It may also be beneficial to compare both spouses as potential principal applicants.

Yes.
French can provide additional CRS points, access to French-language category rounds and possible provincial opportunities. Candidates targeting the French-language category generally need NCLC 7 in all four abilities.

Yes, potentially.
Healthcare occupations remain part of category-based selection, but practising medicine in Canada involves separate provincial licensing requirements. Immigration eligibility and professional licensing are different matters.

Selected engineering occupations are included in the 2026 STEM list.
Eligibility depends on the precise NOC and at least 12 months of qualifying experience during the previous three years. Not every engineering or IT title automatically qualifies.

No assumption should be made from the job title alone.
The current official NOC list must be checked. Category eligibility is determined by the listed occupation and qualifying work experience, not simply by working in the technology sector.

Selected education occupations are included in the 2026 category-based system, including school teachers, early-childhood educators and teaching assistants. Exact NOC eligibility must be checked.

Selected pilots, aircraft mechanics and aviation technicians appear in the 2026 transport category.

The amount depends on family size. The current published requirement begins at CAD 15,263 for one person and increases with each family member.

Generally, family size for settlement-funds purposes includes the applicant, spouse or partner and dependent children, including certain family members who are not accompanying. The exact calculation should be confirmed for the individual case.

No. Real-estate equity is not accepted as settlement funds. The funds must be liquid and available to the applicant.

No. Settlement funds cannot generally be borrowed from another person.

An eligible profile generally remains in the pool for up to 12 months. If no invitation is received, the applicant can submit a new profile if still eligible.

An Invitation to Apply is valid for 60 days.

A provincial nominee must genuinely intend to settle in the province or territory that nominated them.
The PNP should not be used as a route to obtain permanent residence while having no genuine intention to live in the nominating province.

No. Quebec selects its skilled immigrants through separate provincial programs and does not participate in the Provincial Nominee Program.

No.
IRCC determines Express Entry invitations, while provincial governments decide nominations. Superior Consulting Global can assess, strategise and support the agreed application process but cannot guarantee a government selection or decision.
